Although an historical analysis of restitution and compensation cannot exclusively follow the course of legislation enacted on these matters, neverthess that legislation threads through the whole range of themes of the present research project, and this is why we list the most important legal norms hereunder. This survey also shows how complex the patterns of restitution and compensation were and it makes clear how frequently and over what a long stretch of time these legal foundations underwent repeated "repair work".
